Tourism Legends Awards: Joseph Lambert

During its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 17th June 2026 the SLHTA awarded Joseph Lambert with a Tourism Legends Award, in appreciation of his many years of dedicated service, devotion and commitment to the hospitality and tourism industry.

Joseph Lambert was born on May 7th, 1932, in La Perle, Saltibus. His educational journey began at the Laborie Boys School before continuing to the Methodist School, now known as the Gordon and Walcott Memorial Methodist School, and later the RC Boys School. Upon leaving school, Lambert as he was affectionately called pursued his passion for automobiles by taking up an apprenticeship at the M&C Garage, one of the island’s largest and most respected garages at the time. It was there that he developed the technical skills and mechanical knowledge that would later serve him .

Lambert’s daughter Genevieve accepted the award on his behalf.

Those skills proved invaluable when he joined Fletcher’s Touring Service, the island’s first and largest transportation provider. Fletcher’s operated a fleet of approximately twenty thirty-seater coaches and provided transportation services for major cruise lines and international tour operators visiting Saint Lucia. Whenever a vehicle encountered a mechanical challenge, Lambert’s expertise was often called upon, and many times he was able to diagnose and solve the problem.

Lambert became one of the most recognizable and respected figures in Saint Lucia’s tourism industry at the time. Many remember seeing him patiently waiting beside his coach, leaning casually against it as he awaited his turn in the line of vehicles. His face would light up with a warm smile as he welcomed visitors and assisted them on and off his bus. His kindness, patience, and genuine concern for the comfort of his passengers left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Throughout the island, he became known for his professionalism, exceptional hospitality, and remarkable driving skills. His career spanned more than fifty years, during which he earned the admiration and respect of local cruise representatives, international tour operators, and colleagues alike.

It was not uncommon to hear the request, “Send Lambert to drive my people,” a testament to the confidence and trust that so many placed in him. Joseph also had the distinct honor of driving travel agents and international tour operators on behalf of the Saint Lucia Tourist Board during site inspections. He took tremendous pride in showcasing the beauty, culture, and history of Saint Lucia to visitors from around the world.

Those who knew him will remember his crisp shirt, his polished shoes, and the sparkle in his eyes as he spoke about the island he loved so dearly. Every journey was an opportunity to share Saint Lucia’s story, and every visitor was treated as a welcomed guest. His clients included celebrities, diplomats, government officials, and countless visitors who left our shores carrying fond memories of both Saint Lucia and the gentleman who introduced them to it.

Lambert’s legacy extends far beyond the miles he travelled. Through his dedication, professionalism, and genuine warmth, he became an ambassador for Saint Lucia and a shining example of the hospitality for which our island is renowned. The success of our tourism industry was built not only by hotels, attractions, and infrastructure, but by dedicated individuals like him who served with pride, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Visitors may never remember every site they visited, every meal they enjoyed, or every photograph they took. But many will remember the warm smile, kind words, and reassuring presence of the gentleman who welcomed them onto his coach and introduced them to the beauty of Saint Lucia.

Joseph Lambert represented the very best of our people. He was an ambassador, a professional, a mentor, and a proud son of Saint Lucia and for this we honor him as an SLHTA Legend.
