APD Reform Welcomed by the SLHTA

The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association welcomes Air Passenger Tax reforms, announcement by the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, in his 2014 Budget Address.  The news of the abolishing of bands C and D from 1st April 2015, thereby making UK travel to the Caribbean less expensive, is a clear victory for Caribbean Islands which have been lobbying aggressively over the past few years for reformation of the APD, citing negative implications on the price competitiveness of our destination, subsequent reduction in demand by UK visitors to our shores and creates an uneven playing field for the increasingly tourism dependent Caribbean Region struggling to compete with international destinations afforded a competitive edge as a result of the price distortion caused by the APD.

Since 2009, the negative impact of the APD on Caribbean arrivals from the UK has been well documented by the Caribbean Tourism Organization and other international bodies which have noted desperate responses by the regional hotel sector to attract UK guests by offering heavy discounts.  This discounting pattern has resulted in lower yields and profitability for many properties which are still struggling to cope with the impact of the Global Economic Crisis.
While we regret the loss in business to many SLHTA member companies over the years as a result of the APD, it is our hope that this growing understanding that higher taxes impede the growth of the tourism industry, will resonate more deeply with Caribbean leaders as well.

The SLHTA looks forward to the potential increase in arrivals from the UK as a result of this announcement and extends great appreciation to the UK Government and the many lobbying organizations on this accomplishment.

Russian Regatta Boost for Saint Lucia Tourism

Saint Lucia is on the throes of what tourism officials describe as a major investment opportunity, with the launching of a Russian Business Regatta from Sunday March 23 to 28th.

Director of Yachting Cuthbert Didier told CMC that the event will provide an excellent opportunity for St Lucia to nurture relationships with top tier Russian businessmen. “For the island it is really a new frontier. I think we all know Russia is a big player in terms of geopolitics and its repositioning the islands yachting product. It has already benefited us because all the details of the regatta are on their web-sites,” he said.

According to Didier the highly anticipated five day Regatta is expected to provide a solid platform for the Russian guests to explore investment opportunities.

Saint Lucia and Martinique
Strengthen Traditional Cultural Ties
For the past 20 years cultural and historic ties between Saint Lucia and its closest Caribbean neighbor, Martinique, have been kept strong through the traditional sailing of the Gommier Canoe Crossing.

Held annually, the Gommier crossing has helped foster friendly relationships between the people of Martinique and Saint Lucia and more specifically, the twinning of two towns Gros Islet in Saint Lucia and Trois Islet in Martinique. The highly colorful rally also played a significant role in sustaining and maintaining the art of traditional boat building, especially in Martinique where indigenous techniques were quickly disappearing.

Originally coordinated by friendly societies, today the event, which involves scores of participants, is coordinated by the Club des Gommiers De la Martinique. (Gommier Club of Martinique) The bulk of the canoes, called the Gommier, come from Saint Lucia. The boats are built by Saint Lucian builders and shipwrights from Martinique, and are then streamlined for racing.

The Gros Islet Constituency Council and the Saint Lucia Tourist Board (SLTB) have recently concluded the 2014 event, which took place in the northern town of Gros Islet from March 14-16.Tourism Minister the Hon. Lorne Theophilus, Commerce and Business Development Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Gros Islet, Hon. Emma Hippolyte and Gros Islet Mayor Clarence Rambally are among officials who addressed the mariners as part of a pack program of activities to commemorate the Gommier Crossing.

A Bay Gardens Story:
Five Years, Five Visits and Counting

Attracting new guests is not easy, so growing loyal relationships with current guests is crucial for any hotel and the Bay Gardens Resorts has discovered the secret to this over the years, and as a result continues to have multiple repeat guests, who consider themselves part of the family.

Here’s the story of Else Hulse from the USA:
While on a Caribbean cruise five years ago, Else stumbled across St. Lucia – a beautiful, vibrant island full of life – and by chance discovered the Bay Gardens Inn. Five years later, she’s looking back on five memorable visits, while looking ahead to 2015 when she’ll share her favourite hotel with her family.

Else attributes her loyalty to Bay Gardens Resorts to the level of quality and personalized service she receives from the entire team. “You feel like you’re a part of their family.” She loves the fact that the same room is reserved especially for her every year. The bartenders know her favourite drink – a Grasshopper… closely followed by Piton Beer, and the kitchen team knows just how to prepare her open croissant, eggs and mushroom sauce for breakfast; or her fish with white wine for lunch.

The added bonus of two additional properties – just a shuttle ride away, gives her a range of dining choices. The music, energy and dancing of Caribbean nights on Wednesday evening captivate her. She is particularly thankful to the Destang family, owners of Bay Gardens Resorts for all of the generosity and love they have shown over the years.

She enjoys the annual dinners they host in their home for their precious repeat guests – an opportunity to share life experiences over exquisite food and good humour in a truly family setting. This year, she was particularly delighted to be a special invitee at the 2014 Staff Awards Ceremony, where she met Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony and other high level guests, and most importantly got to share the evening with the very deserving team members who make her stay worthwhile.

Else proudly recommends Bay Gardens Resorts to not just foreigners, but St. Lucians too! “If you want to get a home away from home, this is the place to be.”
