SLHTA Supports Canaries Infant School Graduation

The Canaries Infant School held its annual graduation ceremony on Tuesday 15th July 2014 under the theme “overcome it, believe it, achieve it”. This theme is appropriate taking into account the recent natural disasters, Hurricane Thomas and the Christmas Eve Trough where students, teachers and residents of canaries got severely affected as a result.

The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) was privileged to be in attendance and celebrate the great achievements of the seventeen (17) intelligent students from the graduating class of 2014.

The SLHTA was represented by Mr. Wendel George, who addressed the gathering on behalf of the SLHTA’s EVP.  He congratulated the students on their achievement and also encouraged parents to continue supporting their children through their school life especially now, as they are young and vulnerable. Mr. George also took the time to thank sponsors, who contributed to the success of the ceremony, including:

  • Ti Kaye Resort  & Spa
  • Barefoot Holidays
  • Serenity Vacation & Tours Inc

The Feature Address was delivered by Ms Celia Mitchel, who addressed the gathering by congratulating the graduating class of 2014. She also made reference to the theme, indicating that it was fitting for the ceremony. Celia shared the story of “Little Red Riding Hood” and how she was confronted by the wolf which threatened to eat her up. Ms Mitchel went further to explain to the students that life may bring obstacles our way but with perseverance we can overcome it.

Ms Celia Mitchel is a past student of the Canaries Infant and Primary Schools. She is also a graduate of the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School where she currently teaches. She then attended the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, Division of Teacher Education and Educational Administration and then the University of the West Indies Open Campus. Ms Mitchel is currently completing her Master’s Degree in Strategic Human Resource Management at the University of Roehampton.

IGY continues with Schools’ Maritime Outreach Programme

The beaming smiles of thirty students from the Grande Riviere Primary were visible from their tented classroom on the Rodney Bay Marina lawn, all the way to the end of the megayacht dock, on Friday June 27 as they received their certificates for participating in IGY Rodney Bay Marina’s second schools outreach event.

Along with two teachers, Anne Marie Unamba and Mineva M’Giala, the invited guests from grades K through 6 were hosted by General Manager Simon Bryan, Sales and Marketing Manager Alana Mathurin and an IGY team from across the network, who introduced the marina and its operations to the primary school children, then split them into teams and led a number of fun nautical activities and competitions.

For Simon Bryan, however, the fun had a serious purpose and sinceassuming the reins at Rodney Bay Marina in 2013, he has spearheaded community outreach and youth development as a priority for Rodney Bay Marina. The marina sponsors several children from the Gros Islet community in the St Lucia Sailing Association’s Youth Sailing Program, through which 2014 Laser 4.7 National Champion Chrisankey Flood has honed his craft for the past four years. Rodney Bay Marina has also supported the development of teenagers and young adults through day charter company Jus’ Sail’s Sail Training Program for the past two summers, an initiative which has introduced young St Lucians to sailing and the marine industry as a career…Read Full Story

Coconut Bay Registers another First,

“Petting Zoo”

Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Bar is building a reputation of being onthe cutting edge and taking the lead in the introduction of unique services for the benefit and pleasure of Guest. The hotel set the pace some years ago when it commissioned what remains the only Lazy River as part of what is the biggest water park on the island.

That habit of leadership in service and product offerings continues with the recent opening of the Coco Coral Petting Zoo on 5th, June, 2014.  The Petting Zoo is the first of its type on the island within the hospitality industry. The opening of the Petting Zoo is the fulfillment of a dream by hotel General Manager, Mark Hawken – a pet project of sorts.

The opening was witnessed by a gathering of curious hotel guest as well as proud staff members. Following the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon the guests who were present took turns in lavishing love of the various animals kept within the zoo. Among them were many young children who were clearly fascinated with the tropical creatures some of which they may never have seen or got the opportunity to even touch.

The opening of the Petting Zoo is a further addition to the on – property attractions and assets of Coconut Bay. Management believes that through the process of interaction with animals in the Petty Zoo, guest can benefit from being educated about these animals and gain a greater appreciation these creatures of nature.

The Petting Zoo currently houses a range of residents including: goats, ducks, donkeys, sheep and one horse. This listing is expected to increase in time. The Petting Zoo is managed by a full-time Zoo Keeper.

Coco Palm Appoints Managers in Key Positions

Coco Palm has appointed two Saint Lucian women to the post of Human Resources Manager and Duty Manager. The award winning boutique hotel have announced Ms Nicole Moore as the Human Resources Manager and Ms Fenna Williams as the Duty Manager.

Ms Nicole Moore will look after the 170 team members as the Human Resources Manager at the 103 room Rodney Bay Village hotel. After working in the United Kingdom with nine years in HR, Ms Moore returned to Saint Lucia in April when she joined Coco Resorts. Nicole has taken up the role to assure both the well being of the team and  to monitor trends in the industry to keep the team up to par. “The hospitality industry is a 365 day operation running 24/7 which can prove both physically and mentally demanding on the team. Assessing their well being and scheduling training have been my priority” said Ms Moore. She went on to say “Keeping up with the industry and meeting guests expectations involves ongoing training which we have been undertaking in June and July with trainers from both the UK and US which was well received in building team spirit” said Ms Moore.

In addition, Coco Resorts has welcomed back Fenna Williams as Duty Manager. “Looking after our corporate and leisure guests is something I feel proud to do on behalf of Coco Palm which I have known from the day it opened almost 10 years ago” said Ms Williams.  “The high repeat guests make my job easy but we can’t rest on our laurels. Word spreads quickly and the internet has only made this faster and to a wider audience which means we have to go the extra mile each time” said the newly appointed Duty Manager. Ms William was previously in the marketing department before a short break and will now be in the forefront to welcoming our guests on arrival and seeing them on departure as well as liaising with our guests with us for meetings or events.

Prime Minister to Address African American Hoteliers and Investors

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony will be keynote speaker at the 18th Annual International African American Hotel Ownership and Investment Summit and Trade Show, today, July 18, 2014. The summit is being held at the Miami Marriot Biscayne Bay Hotel.

Dr. Anthony has been invited to speak on the topic of “Investment and Incentive Opportunities in Saint Lucia”.

According to CEO/President of the Horizons International Group Inc, Mr. Andy Ingraham, “The 3-day educational summit is designed to educate attendees on becoming a hotel owner or investor, share minority investment trends, explore supplier opportunities, how to market to minorities and diversity issues affecting the industry. Summit attendees include African American hoteliers, entrepreneurs, national leaders and hospitality representatives, professional athletes, restaurant owners, city/state/country officials, development representatives and financial experts.”

Prime Minister Anthony says he is delighted that he has been invited to address the luncheon, as it gives him an opportunity to sell Saint Lucia to potential investors. Dr. Anthony said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to promote Saint Lucia as an investment destination. Research has shown that the Caribbean is not a very attractive investment market to African Americans. This is a unique gathering where African American hoteliers and potential investors in that sector gather to exchange ideas and explore opportunities. As such, I will endeavor to share the Saint Lucian experience as well as the incentives that are available to investors. There is now mounting interest in investing in Saint Lucia and it is vital that we make use of every opportunity that comes our way.”

The Prime Minister left island on Thursday, July 17, 2014 and will return on Sunday, July 20, 2014. During his absence, Hon. Philip J. Pierre, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Port Services and Transport will act as Prime Minister.

All arrangements for the Prime Minister’s attendance at the summit have been made by the National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators and Developers.

The Summit is also attended by officials of Invest Saint Lucia.
