SLTB Endorses “Amy Stephen” for 2012 Carnival Queen Pageant

The Saint Lucia Tourist Board is again demonstrating its robust support for Saint Lucia’s premiere cultural showpiece with a ringing endorsement of one of the 7 contestants vying for the coveted title of 2013 National Carnival Queen.

The island’s lead promotions and marketing agency has given the nod to the talented and beautiful 19 year old Amy Stephen from the charming west-coast village of Anse La Raye. The soft spoken yet energetic and witty Miss Stephen, on Monday evening June 17, officially became Miss SLTB when she was presented to her sponsor at a sashing ceremony at the Alliance Francaise De Sainte Lucie.

The talented teen admits to being no stranger to pageantry, as in 2005 she participated in the Mr.  & Miss LHCSS and placed first. In 2008 she represented Saint Lucia in the Haynes Smith Caribbean’s Most Talented Teen Pageant in St. Kitts and placed second runner.

Tourist Board Director Louis Lewis says, “Miss Stephens will be presented to SLTB staff and will no doubt be welcomed into our dynamic family. We are involved in more than just carnival and in fact are hosting a number of exciting summer promotional campaigns like Staycation/  Summmerliicious, along with a major US/Saint Lucia Showcase happening in the midst of the carnival season and can already foresee valuable avenues where we can spotlight Miss Stephen.”

Ministry of Tourism, Heritage and Creative Industries conducts Carnival Impact Assessment

The Ministry of Tourism, Heritage and Creative Industries in joint partnership with the Central Statistics Office (CSO) will be conducting a series of surveys during carnival 2013 commencing Saturday June 22, 2013 to Saturday July 20, 2013, both dates inclusive.

Carnival has gained prominence and acceptance over the years as one of the most sought after events on Saint Lucia’s social calendar and as such, key stakeholders have for some time expressed concern as to the economic contribution of the art form to Saint Lucia’s economy. The survey will be conducted at ALL major carnival events as well as fringe events during the aforementioned period in order to capture key data on both the demand – pull to visitors generated by the various activities as well as the documented contribution that carnival provides to the economy. Further, the information gathered will help to chart a more productive experience for all.

In order to efficiently and effectively determine the true measure of the festival’s impact on the local economy and to improve the quality of future events, the Ministry of Tourism solicits the co-operation of patrons both directly and indirectly involved in the various activities and requests that full support be given to the enumerators from the Central Statistics Department, who will be conducting the survey.

Rainforest Hideaway Restaurant Welcomes the

Lionfish onto the Menu

The Lionfish has arrived in Marigot.  Heading south through the Caribbean after some of them were accidentally released from an aquarium in Miami, it’s finally reached our shores and is eating its way through our coral reefs.

The lionfish is voracious with no predators in the Caribbean so it cannot be controlled – in fact, in some areas of the Caribbean it’s reported that they are the only fish around because they’ve eaten everything else.  Drastic action is called for and Rainforest Hideaway Restaurant is doing their bit for the ecosystem by putting lionfish on the menu.

The only good thing about lionfish is that they are delicious once you know how to prepare them.  Although they have venomous spines, these are easy to remove once you know how and it’s a delicate tasting and delicious white fish which is totally safe to eat when caught in our waters.  In fact, in New York it’s apparently the latest delicacy and US visitors have been asking whether they can eat it here – well now they can!

Judith Verity, Owner of the Rainforest Hideaway stated, “We are hoping that other hotels and restaurants will follow our example island wide because we can only stop this predator fish from destroying our precious reefs, by eating them ourselves. If you are preparing the Lionfish for the first time, please contact the St Lucia Fisheries Department and they will send a trained person to demonstrate how it’s done.”

For reservations to taste this delectable treat, please contact Rainforest Hideaway Restaurant at 451-4485 or at
