SLHTA marks World Environment Day 2025

SLHTA marks World Environment Day 2025
(Castries, Saint Lucia – Thursday, June 5th 2025) — As the world unites to observe World Environment Day 2025 under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution,” the Saint Lucia Hospitality & Tourism Association (SLHTA) reaffirms its commitment to a tourism industry that goes beyond growth, one that restores ecosystems, supports local communities and drives regenerative impact.
This year’s theme serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing challenge plastic pollution poses to our ecosystems and human health globally. Building on the momentum from Earth Day 2025, when the SLHTA signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding with the SUNx Institute to promote Climate Friendly Travel in Saint Lucia, the Association continues to champion initiatives that align with global sustainability goals.
Ongoing Initiatives and Member Engagement
- New leadership for action: The SLHTA’s Environment Committee recently welcomed a new Chairwoman, Ms. Rodesha Reid. With nearly two decades of experience in the hospitality and tourism industry, Ms. Reid brings unmatched expertise in sustainability strategy, food safety, environmental health and operational excellence. Under her guidance, the committee is poised to drive meaningful change among our member companies.
- Safeguarding Saint Lucia’s marine environment: At the SLHTA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 28th, 2025, the Marine Health Alliance (MHA) was officially launched. Supported by seed financing of US$100,000 from the SLHTA’s Tourism Enhancement Fund and managed by the Saint Lucia National Conservation Fund, the MHA will back initiatives such as reef protection, coastal clean-ups and mangrove restoration. The first call for proposals will be announced later this month.
- Supporting greener business practices: With a focus on advancing Climate Friendly Travel, the SLHTA is exploring ways to support member companies in adopting low-carbon, climate-conscious practices.
- Tackling food waste: Recognizing the environmental and economic cost, the SLHTA is also advancing initiatives aimed at reducing food waste within the tourism sector. Minimizing food loss not only helps protect natural resources but also improves operational efficiency and supports a more sustainable tourism industry.
SLHTA President Erwin Louisy said, “At our AGM earlier this year, we signaled our clear intention to champion tourism’s regenerative impact. As the industry continues to experience record growth, we must also ensure that our environment is safeguarded, and that tourism not only sustains but actively restores and enriches the places and communities that make it thrive. This requires the collective effort of all stakeholders including government, the private sector, communities and visitors alike, working together to create lasting, positive change. On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of the SLHTA, I wish all our stakeholders and partners a Happy World Environment Day!”
