SAINT LUCIA SECURES 2ND PLACE IN THE FLORIDA CARIBBEAN CRUISE ASSOCIATION (FCCA ESSAY) COMPETITION
The Department of Tourism, Information and Broadcasting is pleased to announce that Saint Lucia has once again captured one of the top three spots in the Senior Division of the 2018 Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Essay Competition. Fourteen year (14) old Ariel Albert of the St. Joseph’s Convent secured 2nd Place with her essay submission on the topic “What Cultural Aspects of My Country Should Cruise Passengers Experience?” In response to the question, Ms. Albert highlighted the following:
“Tourist should also be introduced to our esteemed festivals. Since the ships only remain in port for a short period of time, the likelihood of visitors experiencing one of our festivals is slim. This is why I feel that we must cater to the tourist by giving them a taste of what occurs during our festivals. We can take the time out to arrange mini festival-like events for the tourists who are unable to experience these momentous occasions. These events would serve as a form of entertainment which would also offer educational benefits as we introduce tourists to the dances, songs and other activities performed at these festivals. Festivals such as Jounén Kwéyol, Carnival, La Rose Flower Festival and La Maguerite Flower Festival which occur at different points in the year would have the opportunity to become memorable experiences for our visitors. We can also explain the background of these festivals giving further insight into how our unique culture has developed”.
According to the FCCA, “this year’s contest attracted entries from nineteen (19) nations. As you can imagine, it was very difficult to choose the overall winner in each age category, as all the essays we received exemplified Caribbean excellence”.
The Department therefore congratulates Ms. Albert and the St. Joseph’s Convent on a well written essay which highlights the importance of the cruise sector as part of our tourism product and the many ways in which we can incorporate our culture and heritage, thus ensuring a memorable experience for cruise passengers. Ms. Albert and her school will each receive a cheque in the amount of US$1,500.
The competition is an annual initiative of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) and is geared towards increasing the awareness of the cruise sector among its member countries.
