Caribbean Junior Duelling Challenge 2015

The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association Inc (SLHTA) has taken the lead on the development of the island’s youth with initiatives such as the SLHTA Chefs in Schools Cook Off Competition which is in its second year. The competition is targeted at Secondary School students with a keen interest in Culinary Arts. Every year the SLHTA reaches out to at least 5 schools around the island to participate in the event. This year is no different with five schools participating in the cook off, with Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School winning the coveted Title “SLHTA Chefs in Schools Cook Off Champions 2015”.

As such the team will represent Saint Lucia at the 2nd annual Caribbean Junior Culinary Conference which will take place in Barbados from August 20 to 23, 2015 at the Culinary Arena in Barbados.

Participants attending this year’s event will be treated to Demonstrations conducted by Bill Moore and Chesterfield Browne, among others. Mr. Moore is a Hospitality professional, a well-known Caribbean Culinarian, owner of Push Cart Foods Inc. and has been the organizer of the annual Taste of the Caribbean culinary competition for approximately twenty years ( Mr. Browne is an International Brand Ambassador and Mixologist at Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd in Barbados and is the first winner of the “Global Rum Ambassador of the Year” Award (

The CJCC will also feature Workshops and Presentations by industry professionals and stakeholders including Gastronomy, Wine and Beverage Educator, Mr. Josué Reyes from Puerto Rico and Director of the Barbados Community College Hospitality Institute & Educator, Mrs. Bernice Critchlow-Earle. The highlight of the Conference will be the 7th annual Caribbean Junior Duelling Challenge competition.

To compete, countries will be required to field a team of two (2) junior cooks, who must be between the ages of 13 and 20 years old. The CJDC is comprised of a National Dish or Signature Dish Round and a Mystery Basket Round; the scores from these two rounds will be totaled and the three highest scoring teams will advance to the finals.
