Roti ThrowdownBay Gardens Resorts hosted its first annual ‘Roti Throwdown’ on December 17, 2014 at the Seagrape Beach Bar located at the Bay Gardens Beach Resort.

The roti making competition saw Bay Gardens Resorts’ award-wining Executive Sous Chef, Peter Lawrence vying against two popular Reduit Beach roti makers, Elizabeth Forrester and Shirley Devi. The contestants put on a live demonstration before three judges and an audience of Bay Gardens Resorts’ guests, management, members of the media and other invited guests. Each contestant prepared a seafood and chicken roti from scratch within a set 20-minute time frame.

The competition was envisioned by the local resort group’s Executive Director, Sanovnik Destang. Destang commented that the friendly competition was intended to showcase the true skill of all three contestants, each of whom has numerous years of experience in making rotis. In addition, the two beach vendors have received multiple commendations on the Bay Gardens Resorts’ Trip Advisor page through the years.

In the end, Ms. Elizabeth Forrester won the chicken roti category and was the overall winner capturing the title of ‘Best Roti on Reduit Beach’ with 445 points. Chef Peter Lawrence won the best seafood roti category and placed second with 414 points. Ms. Devi placed third with 325 points. An emotional Forrester thanked the management team of Bay Gardens Resorts for providing a platform for her to express her culinary talent.

Judges for the competition were Mr. Noorani Azeez (Executive Vice President of the St. Lucia Hotel & Tourism Association), Mr. Ronald Ramjattan (Founder and CEO of Baron Foods limited) and Chef Adil Sherwani (Owner of Spice of India Restaurant). Points were awarded for flavor, shell, filling and presentation. Sponsors for the event were Baron Foods Limited, Lazy Lagoon Limited and The Trophy Center.
