FOCUSING ON AGRICULTURE FOR WORLD FOOD DAY

The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) is taking a new approach to the whole issue of food security on the island, especially as it relates to the Hotel and Tourism Industry.

Last week SLHTA met with Farmers to discuss the issue of demand and supply of the hotels and restaurants on the island. Part of the discussions were to understand the challenges that they face and to offer possible solutions for these barriers.

The 2014 World Food Day theme – Family Farming: “Feeding the world, caring for the earth” – has been chosen to raise the profile of family farming and smallholder farmers. It focuses world attention on the significant role of family farming in eradicating hunger and poverty, providing food security and nutrition, improving livelihoods, managing natural resources, protecting the environment, and achieving sustainable development, in particular in rural areas.

In light of this year’s theme by the FAO, the Association is committed to the development of agriculture on the island, encouraging St Lucians to grow more local produce in an effort to mitigating poverty, creating employment and sustainability of the island.

OVER EC $1.7 MILLION RAISED IN 1 YEAR

SLHTA TOURISM ENHANCEMENT FUND

The Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) was launched in October 2013 and has raised well over $1.7 million dollars. This was made possible by an outpouring of support by several hotels and visitors to the island. The level of enthusiasm which accompanies the first year of operation for the TEF signals the significant contribution which tourism can make to the social fabric of St. Lucia. Thus far, several projects have been undertaken by the fund, mainly a commitment to renovate the culinary lab at the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School, two afterschool programs in impoverished communities, support for the sourcing of a new flight from Canada and the recent beautification of Rodney Bay and its surrounding areas.

On Friday, October 10th 2014 the SLHTA Tourism Enhancement Fund celebrated its first year Anniversary with a luncheon at the L’epicure Restaurant at the Royal St. Lucian by Rex Resort. The luncheon commenced at 12: 30 p.m. and several TEF Hotel participants as well as Ministers of Government joined the SLHTA to celebrate.  The Chief Executive Officer of Sandals Resorts International Mr. Adam Stewart was the guest speaker and the Honorable Phillip J. Pierre, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Port Services and Transport delivered remarks from the Government of Saint Lucia. The event was hosted under the theme “Responsible Tourism – The Way Forward for the Caribbean”.

The SLHTA Secretariat would like to express profound gratitude to all our member Hotels Properties who continue to participate and support this significant initiative.

TOURISM FORUM ON PRODUCTIVITY FORMS PART OF THE NCPC PRODUCTIVITY WEEK

October 13th – 17th 2014

Members of the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) participated in a tourism productivity forum with a spotlight on two important subjects, ICT in Tourism; Innovation and Technology for Growth and the most valuable tool in this industry, our Human Resource; The Relationship Culture Of The Caribbean.

There was also the release of data from a productivity study which was done on the Tourism Sector in Saint Lucia. The study was conducted by Mr. Ryan Straughn of ABELIAN Consulting Services Inc. and presented to the members.

The study highlighted the level of Productivity in Hotels & Restaurants on the island measuring the productivity based on labour and capital. The study showed that from 2002 to 2013 there has been inconsistent growth on productivity when compared to the rest of the economy. One of the major challenges affecting labour productivity based on employment is the turn-down of the economy and the changes in technology.

How the Caribbean needs to carve out an approach to raise its productivity is by addressing the psycho-cultural issues of the relationship culture which impact our work attitudes.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY WITH ISLAND DIVERS AT TI KAYE

RESORT & SPA

Island Divers at Ti Kaye Resort & Spa makes International Coastal Clean up Day an annual event on their calendar. For the second consecutive year this beach cleanup has gain serious momentum by attracting some keen community supporters. For those who are not aware, Anse Cochon located in Anse La Raye is one of the protected marine reserves on the west coast of Saint Lucia. Home to many tropical fish and thriving coral reef, it provides a haven to respectful observers of aquatic life like divers and snorkelers as well as a livelihood to the fishing community of Canaries and Anse La Raye.

Lucia Nick and Sarah Mc Intree not only volunteered to be hands on help but also got Curtis in touch with the Saint. Lucian Cadets Core to come and assist. The participation of volunteers was overwhelming with 15 Cadets along with Cadet Leader Cyril D Elisee, as well as Ti Kaye staff and guests.  LUCELEC STAFF VOLUNTEER TIME AND SUPPLIES TO COMMUNITY OUTREACH

To care is a St Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) Core Value as well as part of the company tagline, “The Power of Caring”.

It was the inspiration that led LUCELEC Senior Shift Operations Supervisor Nathanial Deterville and thirteen others from the Generation Department to volunteer at the Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre. Caring also inspired “Operation Shoe Box” – an initiative to provide school supplies to underprivileged children.

First, the Generation Department who for the past four years has volunteered at the Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre, pressure washing and preparing the grounds for the start of school continued that tradition and broadened its scope to include the Fond St Jacques Primary School this year.

“One of our core values at LUCELEC is caring, we wanted to multiply that to really show we care about our external friends,” says Mr Deterville.

HR Assistant Kedia Daniel was also led by ‘caring’ when she initiated “Operation Shoe Box” with ten other LUCELEC employees. The volunteer effort allowed LUCELEC staff members to donate school supplies and cash in a shoebox.
