The Strongbow Urban Orchard Project
On Monday September 22, Strongbow Apple Ciders, a product of Windward and Leeward Brewery Ltd (WLBL) will unveil the Urban Orchard Project. Strongbow Apple Ciders is an alcohol brand that is made from real apples and it has a cut-through refreshing taste. It is not bitter like beer and is available in a range of flavours.
So what exactly is the Urban Orchard Project? Germaine Serieux, Innovations Manager at WLBL explains: “This project will transform one particular venue for an entire week into an orchard ambience complete with apple trees, where we will take our guests on a journey with Strongbow Apple Ciders brand. This journey will include the origins and ingredients of the product, tasting the product and its use in various recipes.”
According to Serieux “the project” will also present Strongbow Apple Ciders, which comes in many flavours, as an alternative to sparkling wines and champagne.

Anika Reynolds is truly one of our most talented employees doing whatever it takes to please her guests. Anika works as a spa therapist with St James Club Morgan Bay St Lucia, recently receiving the “Beyond the call of Duty Award – General Manager’s Choice”.
She does not hesitate to come in on her day off when needed even when she is not asked too. Customer satisfaction is what keeps this young lady going. Recently we had an employee who was ill, Anika even while being on vacation did not hesitate to come in to ensure that all the treatments for that day was complete. She ensures that every guests she encounters leaves the Spa happy and satisfied.

Fond Doux Plantation Wins Two New 2014 Magellan Awards
Once again, Fond Doux Plantation & Resort is proud to announce the procurement of yet another award. But this time there’s two! Saint Lucia Tourist Board UK Wins an Award at the Travel Bulletin Star Awards
Saint Lucia was acknowledged last week, when the tourist board won the award, ‘Star Caribbean Tourist Office 2014’ at the Travel Bulletin Star Awards.
Now in its 18th year, the Travel Bulletin Star Awards are the UK travel trade’s most prestigious awards programme rewarding every sector of the tourism industry. The awards serve to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence by acknowledging those suppliers that have performed well in 2013/14 and have provided the best products and services possible to UK travel agents.
UK travel agents were invited to champion companies they consider to be the very best by voting for them in a range of industry categories. Commenting on the win, Atlyn Forde, Acting Director of Marketing UK and Europe said, “We continue to develop and cement our relationships with the UK travel trade and constantly seek continuous improvement, so we are extremely pleased to be recognised by the UK travel agents as Star Caribbean Tourist Office 2014.The UK travel trade is very important to us and we plan to increase our trade activities over the next 12 months.”

Caribbean Aviation Day Remarks
Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen. It is a pleasure to be here in St. Thomas for our second Caribbean Aviation Day, after being in Barbados in 2007.
Introduction
This year we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of scheduled commercial aviation. On January 1st, 1914, the airline industry was born with one aircraft, flying one passenger, on one route. This was the maiden voyage of the world’s first airline – The St. Petersburg-Tampa airboat line.
The passenger was Abram Pheil, a former mayor of St. Petersburg, who paid $400 at an auction for the privilege of that first ticket (equivalent to nearly $10,000 today). The flight took just 23 minutes across the bay.
Where are we now
This first flight has grown into an industry that will safely transport 3.3 billion passengers and 52 million tons of cargo in 2014. Today, aviation supports jobs for 58 million people worldwide. And airlines deliver goods worth some $6.8 trillion, a third of the goods traded internationally by value.
Every 60 Seconds
We have come a long way since the first flight took off in St. Petersburg. Every minute, 52 airplanes are taking off somewhere around the world. 44,000 miles are flown and 5,700 passengers are boarding an aircraft.
Aviation’s contribution to the Caribbean

Training for Maintenance Managers on How to Conduct a Proper Site Inspection & Pest Management
The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism presented another sensitization workshop to hoteliers on how to “Conduct a Proper Site Inspection” and “Integrated Approach to Pest Management”.
The morning session focused on mosquito prevention and how to conduct a proper inspection and was facilitated by Mr. Ronald Hewitt from the Ministry of Health, while the afternoon session will touch on the importance of an integrated approach to pest management facilitated by Mr Christopher Lubin of FDL Pest Control Solutions. The training was held at Auberge Seraphine on Thursday 18th September 2014.
These workshops were made possible through a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Health and FDL Pest Control Solutions.
Approximately 25 maintenance, Housekeeping and Grounds Managers and Supervisors were in attendance.

50 Years of Powering the Nation
LUCELEC
Saint Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) begun a series of events in observance of its 50th anniversary with a Thanksgiving Service and Reception on Wednesday September 17, 2014.
LUCELEC celebrated its milestone anniversary on July 1, 2014 under the theme, “LUCELEC: 50 Years of Empowering the Nation”.
A number of officials are expected to join members of the LUCELEC Board of Directors, past and present staff and other guests at the event to be held at the National Cultural Centre.
All LUCELEC customers are asked to note that in order to facilitate staff attendance at the Thanksgiving Service and Reception, LUCELEC customer service locations at Vieux Fort & Soufriere will be closed from 10:00 am and at Sans Souci & Rodney Bay from 12:00 noon on Wednesday September 17, 2014.
Normal operations will resume at these locations on Thursday September 18, 2014.

Business Training for Small Hotels
The Ministry of Tourism, Heritage and Creative Industries has partnered with the Saint Lucia Tourist Board and Saint Lucia Hotel Association to organize a two day training programme designed to equip owners and operators of small properties with basic business training. This training was scheduled for September 16 and 17, 2014 at Palm Haven and will continue over the next six months.
The partner agencies are cognizant of the invaluable contribution of this subsector to the product offering, and the need to enhance its capacity to continuously develop competitive products and deliver quality service. They have secured the services of experienced facilitators who will provide the information necessary to enhance skill set of participants. The training areas include but are not limited to Strategic Planning, Understanding Trade Agreements and Building Competitive Advantage. Small properties (defined by a room stock of 75 rooms or less) are urged to capitalize on this training opportunity.

Encounter Series- Jumpstarting The Economy
The St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture is seeking to host another in its Encounter Series, this time “Jumpstarting the Economy” The Encounter creates a platform to engage members in discussions on important issues. This Encounter “Jumpstarting the Economy – What St. Lucia Needs to do Now!!” will take the format of Panelists offering different perspectives on the issue of how we can, and what should be done to Jumpstart the Economy. Each presentation will be a maximum of 15 minutes long.
What measures does St. Lucia need to adopt in the short to medium term to turn around and Jumpstart the Economy? What are the fundamental and long term measures we need to institute at various levels to ensure Long Term Sustainable Economic Growth and Development?
Jumpstarting The Economy – What St. Lucia needs to do Now” will be held on Wednesday 17th September 2014, from 6.30 p.m. at the Palmville Conference Room, Coco Palm Resorts.
Panelists for this encounter are Dr. Didacus Jules- Director General of OECS, Radical St. Lucian Educator and Mr. Marius St. Rose- Retired Banker, Economist, and Educatorand Mr. Hadyn Gittens – General Manager BOSL, Commercial, Corporate and Credit Risk Management Expert.
