Tourism Key to
diversity & Sustainability
|
Alfonso Munera, Secretary General, Association of Caribbean States (ACS), said tourism is crucial for the economies of Latin America and the Caribbean. “Tourism is important for the entire region. Fifteen per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the region is derived from tourism, 12 per cent of the jobs in the region are associated with tourism,” he said. He was speaking yesterday on the opening day of the 12th Special Committee on Sustainable Tourism, ACS, Sweet Briar Road, St Clair.
For tourism to develop regionally he said the air and water routes must be connected. “We can not develop tourism if there is no connectivity in the region. Connectivity by air and maritime routes also develops the economy. Right now the global monopolies control the lines of connectivity in the region and it is not easy to move from one country to a next,” he said. Juliana Boodram, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Tourism who also spoke at the opening ceremony, said tourism can help diversify the region’s economies.
“Tourism is important for economic diversification. Tourism can be used as a tool for poverty alleviation which is an important goal in all countries. It is also a means of achieving balanced and sustainable growth,” she said. She said regional countries must take note of how other countries are focusing on tourism in their economies.
“As we promote long-term growth for sustainability, we recall that last year the world reached that landmark of one billion visitors. All over the world tourism is growing. We see are seeing from US President Obama to Middle Eastern leaders to all over the world that nations are coming to terms with the benefit of tourism and every single country is pushing and growing tourism,” she said. She also called for countries to share their experiences.
“In this hemisphere we have probably seen one of the greater increases world wide. There are countries like Costa Rica, Cuba and others. These countries have much to teach us in terms of visitor arrivals. Although we see economic downturns globally, tourism has continued to grow in some areas,” she said.

The Power Of Social Media To Win An Election …
And Clients For You
Trinidadian politician Austin “Jack” Warner is certainly a polarizing figure and if you have been following the run up to the Chaguanas West by-election over in Trinidad it’s not hard to believe that Jack is on the verge of winning the seat and this would be in no small part due to the power of social media. Jack launched his own political party, the Independent Liberal Party, on July 5th 2013 and while I do not know how many likes he had on his facebook page on that date, on July 13th he announced his 20,000th like. Then just three days later, on July 16th he announced that between 11:00 PM on the 15th and 6:00 AM next morning his likes had jumped by 15,500 and at the time of this writing his likes stand at 96,942 with just over 71,000 of those likes “talking about his page”.
Now that is viral growth at its quintessential best for a Caribbean facebook page that neither belongs to an entertainer, like a Rihanna, nor a sports superstar like Usain Bolt.
Now Jack has used some rather interesting and effective social media marketing tactics to grow his likes so quickly, one of which is a competition for a night out in his green Hummer. To participate one must take a picture of themselves with the green Hummer and tag themselves in the picture. By tagging themselves in the picture it immediately shows up in the news feeds of all their friends which means that hundreds of thousands of people will be simultaneously exposed to Jack’s green Hummer and all that it signifies, giving Jack some really powerful reach from this facebook competition.
And what is the significance of all of this you may ask? Well it is all about visitor engagement and getting visitors to your page to take a particular action and there are lessons to be learnt from Jack’s effective use of Social Media Marketing that we can all apply to our tourism businesses.
Oh and here is an interesting point to note – While traditionally campaigning must stop on election day this is actually the perfect day to ratchet up campaigning and social media lends itself effectively and unobtrusively to accomplishing this.
This by-election over in Trinidad clearly illustrates the power of social media when used effectively and clearly illustrates how quickly a very large number of people can be influenced in the direction of your bidding.
My question to you is “How is Social Media currently helping you grow your business and how can Social Media grow your business even more?”

According to a visitor from New York,
“Zip Lining was awesome!”
“I traveled alone to St. Lucia for a needed vacation. I met some many wonderful people and did tons of awesome things, one of which was zip lining. I had a wonderful experience and the Estate is beautiful. Our guides were awesome! Yannick, Charkar was so informative and fun! Not only did I have a blast zip lining but I learned a lot about the property and the Island from him. While I was out on the course I met the gentleman who helped to build the course. He was there checking it out, making sure everything was up to par and inspecting for safety which was extremely comforting. I would recommend this place for zip lining to everyone who travels to St. Lucia! Visited September 2012“
Experience a real St. Lucia Plantation with a working mill and see key steps in the making of sugar cane syrup, producing cocoa and coffee and processing coconuts for food products. Also visit historical features of the estate and take a look inside authentic huts within a traditional village setting.
Enjoy a Creole lunch at our restaurant within the grounds of the original Plantation House and browse in our gift shop. Take a stroll around our beautiful botanical gardens, or hike to the Plat Pays. Finish with breathtaking views of the volcano.
For the more adventurous, Soufriere Hotwire Rides now offer ziplining in full view of the Pitons and historical town of Soufriere.
