Excellent Customer Service pays off
A letter written to SLASPA about Ms. Scolastica James who works at the Hewanorra International Airport.
Dear Mrs.  Regis, Mr. Matthews,

Please allow this message to serve as token of my appreciation for the excelling service rendered by the staff under your supervision.
For convenience, on September 3, 2013, I routed my business trip to Martinique through St Lucia. Under a tight schedule and knowing that it would be necessary to change airports I begun searching for information on the usual websites, at no avail. Finally I called the airport number and to my surprise I was able to get as much help as I could possibly need. I’m a 66 year old, seasoned executive and I have flown in excess of 3 million miles, landing at airports of all kinds, sometimes in remote and exotic locations, most times in some of the best equipped  and most modern airports. Based upon such an extensive experience I can, very truthfully, say that I’ve never expected your level of service, in my case materialized in  the person of Ms. Scolastica James.  She immediately understood my concerns and took care of every one of them. Thanks to her courteous attention and personal effort my short passage through St. Lucia’s Hewanorra International Airport was one of the best experiences I’ve had in any of the airports I have been.
Ms. Scolastica is not only a perfectly fitted person for her position as a Police Officer,  greeting and reassuring those who come to your beautiful island; going way beyond the description of her job, she leaves   a strong and lasting positive impression of your country. In the mind of the visitor her open smile and kindness  become the collective broad smile and inherent kindness of St. Lucia itself.

Yours truly
Marcio Perdigao

Police Officers Receive More
Customer Service Training

Second batch of Police Officers receives Customer Service Skills training which was proudly hosted by Bay Gardens Beach Resort & Spa.
The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) is pleased to be associated with such a valuable initiative and has committed to continuing the Training Programme, hoping to reach a total of 120 Police Officers from the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force.
The two day training programme held at the Bay Gardens Beach Resort & Spa according to officers was timely and important.  The training met the following objectives:
  • Recognize that service delivery is an individual response value
  • Understand how your own behavior impacts the behavior of others
  • Develop more confidence and skill as a problem-solver
  • Communicate more assertively and effectively
  • Learn some ways to make customer service a team approach
The participants were very appreciative of the training and had this to say about the programme,
  • ” The training should be longer because it is interactive and very informative”
  • “I don’t think there was any room for improvement for the course. It was very easy to understand and very informative”
  • “I think the training was well put together”
  • “I believe two days is not enough time for a customer service workshop.  It should be longer”
The training is being undertaken in response to a request from the Royal St Lucia Police Force for assistance to strengthen the human relations competencies of officers.  The first round of training was held in collaboration with the Bay Gardens Beach Resort & Spa. The workshop took place at the conference room of the resort on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th October 2013 from 9:ooam to 3:00pm.
This training programme is scheduled to continue very soon at Sandals Resorts.  The SLHTA extends its gratitude to Bay Gardens Resorts for facilitating this timely initiative.

Onam festival at Habitat Terrace Hotel

The Malayalees (Keralites) in St. Lucia celebrated the Onam festival at Habitat Terrace Hotel in Bonne Terre, Gros Islet on the 15th of September 2013. It was arranged by Kerala Association of West Indies (KAWI), the first ever Kerala Association across the Caribbean. Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala, the southernmost part of India. It is an ancient festival marked by various festivities, including intricate flower carpets, elaborate banquet lunches, snake boat races and various traditional onam games.

Onam is the most popular festival of Kerala (a southern coastal state of India). This is celebrated with a great enthusiasm throughout Kerala for a period of ten days. Every year this festival falls on the Malayalam month of Chingam – between August and September and also known as the harvest festival of Kerala.
Onam marks the homecoming of King Mahabali, a legendary king, who ruled Kerala in ancient times. That period was believed to be the golden age of Karala, people were happy, free from harm and complete harmony and prosperity was there. This golden age ended when Vamana (an avatar of Lord Vishnu) pushed King Mahabali, deep into the earth. Satisfied by Mahabali’s honesty and generosity, the lord granted him a wish that he can visit his kingdom and dear subjects once in a year.
Onam is celebrated for ten days – Atham is the first day and Thiruvonam is the final day of the celebration. People wear new clothes, decorate their houses and put flower carpet called ‘Pookalam’ in front of their houses, to welcome the King Mahabali. Special pujas are offered in the temples in early morning and younger members take blessings and gifts from the elder members of the family. During Onam traditional rituals are performed followed by a lavish feast with twenty-one homemade curries and sweet payasam on plantain leaf. Spectacular Carnivals of elephants, fireworks, boat races, music and the famous Kathakalli dance are traditionally associated with this festival. The state government of Karala conducts Tourism Week celebrations in connection with Onam, showcasing Kerala’s beauty and culture.
Kerala popularly known as “God’s own Country” has made it as one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Asia. Similar to the St. Lucian serene landscape and climate, Kerala is India’s most advanced society with hundred percent literacy, world-class health care systems and with highest physical quality of life in India. Peaceful and pristine, Kerala is also India’s cleanest state.
Cheryl Skeete Owner and Manager of Habitat Terrace Hotel joined in the celebration in full regalia.

International Coastal Clean Up Day

On September 21st 2013 the Island Divers crew at Ti Kaye Resort & Spa got their community involved for International Coastal Cleanup Day. This annual cleanup campaign encourages people to take action by working together to stop the flow of trash at the source, before it has a chance to reach the water and entangle marine life and ruin our beaches.
Our passionate ocean lovers consisted of our Ti Kaye guests, General Managers, Dive team and local Beach Vendors.  They came out in numbers to support the movement of “TRASH FREE SEAS”.  Recording a total collection of 9 large trash bags the team extracted the following items:
·         5 gallon bucket full of glass bottles
·         An empty propane tank.
·         A tyre
The cleanup campaign led by Dive Shop Manager Robert Arthur, was concentrated in the areas of Anse Cochon bay, and Honeymoon Beach.  Trash was picked up on the coast lines of these beaches as well as on the reefs. The information recorded was provided to the Ocean Conservancy.   We will continue to do our part in protecting our marine environment, and have already circled this activity on our calendar events for next year.
