The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) established this initiative with the aim of educating and supporting students pursuing culinary and/or home economics studies in local Secondary and Tertiary Schools on the island.

The Chefs in Schools Programme facilitates the visit of a Chef from the Saint Lucia National Culinary Team to a school, in order to speak with students who aspire to foster careers in the culinary arts. The visiting Chef shares career highlights, past experiences and industry information with the students. He or she also guides them through a practical preparation of a dish using local ingredients.

The experience is designed to raise the awareness of students about local cuisine and encourage students to use more local ingredients in the preparation of healthy meals. The programme was first held on October 24th, 2012 and included five secondary schools in the first phase.
